How to Turn Off the Focused Inbox in Outlook

Transcript

How do you turn off the focused inbox in Outlook? Now, before I show you how to do that, let's just talk about what exactly the Focused inbox is, you can see that in my Outlook account I have two tabs at the top Focused and Other. And I currently don't have anything in Other. Now, what is the difference between these two? Why do we have two tabs to organise our email? Well, the idea behind the Focused inbox is that mails that come into this inbox are deemed as important mails to you.

They might be mails from contacts that you have in your address book. They might be mails from people that you've emailed before. Whereas the Other tab is kind of for all of the, the junk and the unimportant stuff. So maybe you have newsletters hitting your inbox every week. That would more likely be found underneath that other tab.

So it's really Outlook's way of trying to help you organise your email into important and unimportant. Now, some people love this and other people really don't. Other people just like to see all their mails in one big, long list because like myself, they tend to forget about that other tab. So how do we turn the focused inbox off?

So simple. If you're working in old Outlook, you just go up to the View tab and we have a Focused Inbox group just here. You can see currently mine is selected. If I click it, it is simply going to turn that Focused Inbox off. And you can see now below we just have all of our emails in one list, and then we have another tab, but that's just for unread emails.

Wanna put it back on again? Click on Show Focused Inbox. Now we do have something similar in New Outlook, so I'm simply gonna switch across by using the toggle in the top right hand corner. It's gonna make me restart. So let's click on switch. So I'm in new Outlook now, but notice that we still have the Focused and the Other inbox.

Now, to turn it off in here, you need to go to the view tab and you need to go into view settings. We're gonna click on email and then layout. And then notice the first group here is focused inbox, so if you want to turn that off. You would just need to choose, don't sort my messages and click on save at the bottom.

And then when we close this down, you can see now we just have all of our messages in a big long list, no more Focused inbox. So hopefully that answers your question and applies to whether you are using new Outlook or old Outlook.

Focused Inbox in Outlook automatically sorts your emails into "Focused" for important messages and "Other" for less important ones.

Depending on your version of Outlook, in order to turn off Focused Inbox, you will need to:

  1. Go to the View tab. In the Focused Inbox group, click Show Focused Inbox to turn it off.
